Nice to be back!

School is back on and I must say, it has been so good to be back but especially good to see some of our Room 11 students return to school. Although school is slightly different in terms of the areas we need to stay in and the staggered lunch breaks, we have an understanding that this is to help protect each other.

Here, Room 11 is enjoying playing maths games outside.

Multiplying numbers using more than one way

Today, students shared the different ways you can solve 13 x 7. I did not consider using the doubling and halving strategy because I thought that it might be a little challenging to multiply a decimal number, but it just shows the amazing thinking and processing that my students have. I am super proud :)

Lockdown Learning

Wow, what a busy month it's been! During this month we have celebrated Tongan Language Week and also Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. It's safe to say I would have rather celebrated those languages in class with our class but nonetheless, we still managed to do what we could online.

Last week we officially started our online learning sessions where we met each day for an hour in the morning then an hour in the afternoon. It was really awesome to catch up with students and to reconnect and see how everyone is and what everyone has been up to. Although we are all feeling the same way about missing the face-to-face sessions, it was still nice to reconnect on a different forum.

During our online sessions, we have been doing a range of things such as playing a Scavenger hunt, Kahoot, and doing our Maths number of the day using Jamboard. Today we explored vocabulary and learnt about using adjectives, nouns, adverbs and verbs to create some amazing sentences that would give our readers a clear image of our message. I can't wait to continue working with students to build on the sentences they have started creating.

Below are some pictures of what we've been doing online.

MATHEX CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!

Yesterday, Jahnei, Patrick, Izayah and Gavish represented our school in the Manurewa Cluster, Mathex competition and they won!!!!! We are super proud of them!

What makes it even more special is that they "trained" for 2 days and it was our very first time entering a competition like this. Well done team! You all are amazing!

100 Days of Maths Celebration

Last Friday we celebrated 100 days of Maths. That means that we have been writing facts and everything we know about a certain number all the way up to 100. Mr Rungan brought the whole school a Krispy Kreme doughnut each. In class, we further celebrated with food. Levy made us waffles while Sonasi brought us ice cream. Mmmmmm!

Aronui Games

This term our topic is "Faster, Higher, Stronger-Together". Through this topic, we are learning about ourselves and what attributes we have, that we can contribute to a team environment. Sometimes you are loud, which can be a good thing for being a leader or cheering on your team mates. Sometimes you're quiet so you may be good at listening and communicating ideas. Sometimes you're funny or athletic. We want all our students to know that their attribute is valued in a team.

Each week we will play a game and earn points for our class. The class with the most points will win a gold medal.

Our class colour for our games is yellow. We decided to transform this name to Samasama, which means yellow in Samoan.

Coding using Google Sheets

This morning Patrick, Jahnei, Levy and Kaelyn had a go at squeezing pictures into codes (in this case their name). Once they had finished writing their names they swapped devices and wrote the codes down for their names. We're looking forward to trialling doing actual pictures.

STEM showcase

What a busy week we've had! This term as you may know, we've been learning about the body systems in particular the Circulatory System. Yesterday we had the opportunity to share our learning with our friends, family and our community. We think it was a huge success!!!!!

We shared information about our Heart, we shared our pamphlets that we had worked on earlier in the term and we also shared a coding/maths activity ("Have you got the brains" and "Makeymakey").

We are so proud of the work we produced and shared, and we hope that everyone learnt lots from it.
Here are some photos of us preparing for STEM along with the final products...

Zumba Fundraiser

Last night we had our very first Zumba Fundraiser at our school. I was feeling nervous about it because we had not sold many tickets prior to the event and I wasn't sure if our whanau would do door sales nor come because we have not had the best weather recently.

It ended up turning out so well. We had so many students and parents support us. The dancing was awesome, the routines were crazy (because I couldn't keep up) and everyone looked like they were having fun!

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out to support us! All of the money will be going towards lowering the cost for our Year 5&6 camp.

Lastly, we would like to say a very big thank you to Vanila and her amazing team of Zumba instructors who came out to support our whanau. We are very appreciative of your time and generosity and it would have not been a success without you! ❤️

Road Safety Week

This week is Road Safety Week. We have a Poster Competition going on right now within our school. Check out the cool entries we have so far...

The Circulatory System with Room 10

Yesterday we had our first Topic Rotation within our Senior Syndicate. I had lots of fun teaching the Room 10 students about the Circulatory System.

We had fun tracing each other's body outline, then drawing the heart, arteries and veins in the body. We also learnt about the makeup of our blood.

Making a blood cell model

Today we learnt about the Circulatory System. Part of our learning was about our blood. Did you know that 55% of our blood is made up of plasma while 44% of our blood is our red blood cells. The last 1% is our white blood cells and platelets.
